AGARTALA: The displaced Bru migrants, who are being given permanent resettlement in Tripura, will be exercising their right to vote in the Tripura Assembly elections scheduled next year, an official of the State Election Department said.

Around 5478 families belonging to the Bru community were displaced from the state of Mizoram. These people were settled in twelve locations that had been selected from the eight districts of the state of Tripura. Around 600 families were settled in the Kachanpur sub-division of the North Tripura District of the state of the state.

Some of these migrants Bru people were issued the Electronic Photo Identity Card necessary to cast votes. These were given out based on the locations of the establishment of the people. All the eligible people are of the resettled Bru community are expected to have their names included in the electoral rolls of the state and the photo identity cards will be issued thereafter.

According to sources 60% of the Bru families have also received the benefits of the resettlement package. The process is underway for the rest of the eligible families in the Kanchanpur sub-division.

The settlement of the Bru people had drawn a negative response from the local people of the state which later took the form of massive protest. They even tried to block the entity of the government officials who wanted to visit the area for the legal resettlement of the people based on the community.

Members of the community also expressed their happiness over the power to utilise their right to vote being given back after a gap of 21 years since they were evicted from their original locations.

“After the Bru Migrants from Mizoram were resettled in the State of #Tripura, they exercised their right to vote for the first time in the State.” mentioned the official twitter handle of the Chief Electoral Officer of Tripura.
